ABOUT
The HOPE Initiative Tanzania
About HOPE Initiative Tanzania.”
The HOPE Initiative Tanzania is a charitable, non-governmental organization of the Catholic Diocese of Moshi.
Its focus is on bridging the gaps to address issues related to access, provision, and maintenance of quality education to marginalized children in an effort to offer a meaningful life path to their lives. Special attention is given to children with special needs, marginalized, children from very poor families in Tanzania.
The HOPE Initiative Tanzania is dedicated to augment and complement existing education provided by primary, secondary and vocational institutions, by bridging critical gaps that exist in access and quality, in support of vulnerable children and those with special needs in Tanzania.
The acronym “HOPE” stands for “Help to Optimum Prosperity via Education.” This is an initiative of the Catholic Diocese of Moshi, following the admonition of our Lord Jesus Christ to us; “give them something to eat’ (Lk. 9:13).
It is an effort to do whatever can be done make sure marginalized and poor children have the needed resources for them to realize their full potentials as citizens. Thus, the name; “The HOPE Initiative Tanzania.
The HOPE Initiative Tanzania is in an NGO, registered in Tanzania with Registration Number: 00NGO/R/8145 since 2025.
Background to the Initiative
The provision of quality education to children with special needs in Tanzania, specifically, those in the Catholic Diocese of Moshi, has had a significant impact and has contributed to the attainment of the diocesan millennium goals. The inauguration of St. Pamachius Inclusive Secondary School in 2019 marked the dawn of a targeted, strategic approach by the Catholic Diocese of Moshi to provide inclusive education in Tanzania.
In the past seven (7) years, over 150 students with special needs from all over Tanzania (i.e., deaf, blind, physical impairments, many with Albinism, and some with mild cognitive disabilities) have benefited from the quality secondary education they receive at St. Pamachius. Students with special needs have access to special equipment to assist their learning (e.g., orbit readers, magnifiers, braille paper, enlarged print books, and braille embossed books, to mention a few). All these educational and formative materials have been provided by gracious contributions from a variety of stakeholders.
A significant percentage of children with special needs have completed the mandatory levels of education and are able to proceed with tertiary and advanced levels of secondary education in different educational institutions in Tanzania.
Despite the success highlighted above, it is evident that there are significant challenges facing the provision of quality education to children with special needs at our school. The school has consistently experienced inadequate availability of finances to fund the basic educational provisions in an inclusive setting. This has always limited our ability to enroll students with special needs and delayed our planned implementation of education and programs necessary for these children.
The realization of this challenge has led us to initiate alternative approaches to make the school sustainable while fulfilling its core duty while educating each child and equipping them with the skills they need for independent living. One of these initiatives is the formation of “The HOPE Initiative Tanzania.” a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), to find and facilitate the availability of sustainable financial means and other resources to support the education of children with special needs in Tanzania.

Children from Destitute Families
Despite many efforts by the Government and Non-Government institutions to subsidies education in our country, poverty remains a great hindrance for many children to access school. Through our programs these children are introduces to formal learning at their levels.
Out-of-School Children
Children advance differently at school. Some drop out of school for various reasons – sickness, family conflicts, poverty, pregnancy. The HOPE Initiative works to identify and reintroduce them to alternative learning pathways, to re-enter formal education or acquire skill necessary for their livelihood.
